OUR INITIATIVES

Our Traditions

Our Annual Concert, our Bunny Parade and our Transition to School bus tour are just some of the traditions we have developed over time; it is part of our culture and generations of children still talk about these memories of their time with us.

ALNF
Our educators have a Certificate IV in Early Language and Literacy as part of a program put forward by the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation in support of disadvantaged communities such as ours. Our studies included various elements of literacy, including handwriting, reading, letter sounds, rhyme and phonics to name but a few.

Gumbaynggirr
Two of our educators have completed a Certificate II in the local Indigenous community (Gumbaynggirr) language and their knowledge is utilised throughout the Kindy with songs, poetry and words from our local indigenous culture. Each year we join with the local NAIDOC week celebrations and a sense of unity is created.

Spanish
The Big Teds are engaged with a national initiative to support children in preschool to learn another language. Children use iPad apps to learn key words and expressions in Spanish, which is extended throughout the Big Teds curriculum.

STEM
Our Kindy has been chosen to take part in a pilot project involving 100 preschools across Australia. The ELSA program is designed to strengthen children’s learning in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We are honoured to be chosen and excited to take part.

The Circle of Security
As part of a research project many of our staff were trained in this relationship-based teaching strategy. The importance of strong supportive relationships between children, families and educators, as well as a focused way of interacting with children, has enriched our program as a result.

Kids Matter
Kids Matter is a mental health and well-being initiative for early childhood education and care services. In working within this framework, our Kindy hopes to create a positive Kindy community, teach children skills for solid social and emotional development, work together with families and recognise and access support for children with mental health problems.

The Wider World
Through excursions into our community and regular performances at Kindy, we are able to engage the children in everything from a magical musical show to an African storytelling drumming experience, to name but a few.
